You can never out-give life...

Clients often work with me because they want to find out what their purpose is in life.  Or even, what the purpose is of life itself.

Here’s what I’ve discovered…

Life is about giving – not taking.  Our culture teaches us to grab, and compete, and grasp for stuff/people/experiences/status etc but I believe if you give freely of yourself to life it will always just give back to you.  In spades!  Giving is something I can control. What comes back to me I can’t control.  So I focus on what I can do and trust that the right stuff/people/experiences/status will come back to me.  It makes for a life full of gratitude and acceptance.

We each have something unique to give to the world.  Your purpose is the thing you enjoy.  That could be raising your children, climbing a mountain, leading your team, baking cakes, restoring old paintings, organising your boss – whatever you enjoy is your purpose.  And it’s unique to you.  It’s how life is choosing to flow through you so by not doing it you are denying us all your unique gift…

Your purpose evolves throughout your life so stay open to change.  What drove me in my thirties (raising my three girls when they were pre-school) has shifted in my forties to my career (and loving those girls and my lovely partner, obviously).   Passions change – that’s what keeps us interested.

I was asked to make a film about this to inspire the next generation.  It’s such a beautiful piece (thanks to Eddie and his team at Bath Sparkling Wine).  Here is it…

“You Can Never Out Give Life” – Jo Emerson

If you want to find your purpose, ask yourself what you can give to the world – it’s absolutely the best place to start.
